A house. A living space.....NOPE! While all these responses at times seem appropriate, they are entirely inadequate. In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy realized that "home" was the most important place. In fact, to get there she had to repeat, "There's noplace like home." Home is where the heart is. It is where we are loved and where we love.
Charles Marling and Alice Cooper both have been under hospital care for some time and have finally been released to go home. I visited both of them today and they are both MUCH,MUCH happier being HOME. While Charles still isn't well and still has aches and neroprathy in his feet, he is so glad to be "home" with Diane. Alice is still using oxygen as she continues to get stronger daily. She longs to get back to church and friends, but is also happy in her home. Yes, home is a place that we refer to when we talk about where we hang our clothes. But more than that it is where we find and give love. "There's no place like HOME!"

<img style="display:block; It’s the New Year and our prayers have helped to ease the pain or anxiety of several of our brothers and sisters in Christ.
In December we had several “family” members and friends go through some trials. We know from scripture that He will never allow us to have more than we can handle…so with prayer many have overcome obstacles recently.

Billie Davis underwent surgery and it was successful in giving her needed pain relief. She looks good, is now at home, and improving daily.

Jack Zerkel’s new hip is getting used to him…or the other way around. It was good to see him back at church.

Don Kottlowski went to be with the Lord and he will know no more pain or have any more confusion.

Alice Cooper is now in a rehab center after a scary heart attack and bout of pneumonia. Her family fought along side of her every step of the way. Our prayers for her restored health seem to be a part of God’s master plan.

My hand is healing from surgery…(even if it is taking me longer than normal to type this!!!)

I heard that Dwayne Wilson was just taken to Hancock Regional Hospital with pneumonia last weekso our work goes on! Dwayne is now home resting.

Susan VanRooy’s brother Bryan is in critical care in Cincinnati after an accident at work. A tree fell on him crushing many bones.

Please know that God hears all our prayers and that all things work for good for those who love the Lord! Pray …pray…pray!
Best wishes for a happy and healthy new year!

HIS,

Roger

Be Joyful and Know Why You Are...

Christ is for ALL people. So is Christmas! May the love of Christ find you all well and happy this Christmas.

Phillip Yancey said, "Faith means trusting in advance what will only make sense in reverse." So many things in this life make no sense to us. God is at work and instead of needing to know all the details of the plan, the pieces of the puzzle, we just need to trust Him today. Grab hold of what we know today, follow Christ, and trust God as he puts all the pieces together.

Remember those who came before you!
When you're driving down a country road and you see a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle. You know he didn't get up there by himself. They thought it was restricting blood flow leaving Pam with much less energy than she should have. The surgery went well and Pam came home from the hospital a couple days later. Last week, she came down with a "cold and cough." She apparently coughed hard enough to tear out some stitching leaving her to bleed into her leg. Jay was "on the road" and Pam knew something serious was wrong so she called 911. God was with her! The emergency squad was able to stop her bleeding and save her life. At the hospital she had a large embolism removed. Now, after several more days, she has come home. Many prayers have been sent upward for her the past few weeks but continued prayer is needed. Jay still needs to work and she needs someone with her 24 hours a day while Pam rests. Barb Woods is trying to find friends in our church family who can stay with her for shifts of a few hours at a time. She also is organizing for meals to be carried in for a while. If you would like to help in any way, contact Barb. You can always pray and be sure to thank God for His excellent care and support for this family.

IHS,

Roger

Charge Conference

Tonight was the area "charge conference" held at Trinity Park UMC where District Superintendent Bert Kite, challenges congregations for the coming year. Many congregations explained their new goals for the 2012. Many pastors read the names of new members in their respecttive congregations. And D.S. Kite delivered a wonderful message titled, "Come Home by Another Way." Also attending were Justine Handley, our Board Chairperson; Denny Woods, Chairman of the Elders; and Wayne Beck, Director of Sunday School Progams.
Cookies and apple cider was served. I planned to go help my nephew, Ted Jacobs, move his grandparents into assisted living housing. Then I had four members of our church family to visit later.
(Ted goes into IU hospital tomorrow to donate a kidney for a co-worker, Cathy Dowling, from Greenfield-Central High School.)

OOOPS! Routine out the window! The move was difficult and to a second story apartment. It was about 1:00 p.m. when I got a call from Vetha Jordan and then Kathy Wilson telling me Dale Kitley had fallen. He was taken to Hancock Regional Hospital then on to St. Vincent's on west 86th street. Anita was with me so we left to be with Roberta up at the hospital. We found Dale and Roberta still in the emergency room at St. Vincent's. After visiting with Dale, we all prayed for his healing and for the comfort of his family...at home and in our congregation. Dale is so beloved by his church family. He is such a fine Christian man and leader in our congregation. Dale is 90...and still works tirelessly for our Lord.
Please pray for him. Please honor him with "get well" wishes. He was then moved to a regular room. He is in Room 5407 now.

Then Anita and I went to make sure Ann was OK. We found her at home with Gloria having dinner. Kelly Merlau was there helping out too. We all need our support groups. Ann has all of us to pray for her and her immediate family to be with her.

WE know God holds these two in the palm of His hands and will accept them with open arms in His time. Continued prayers are welcome!!!

IHS,

Roger

Jake Gumberts

This morning after our prayer breakfast I made a bee-line for Community East Hospital where Jake Gumberts, Kay's husband, was having a knee placement. I got there about 11:30 since they were going to take him in early for the procedure. By about 1:00, they finally got around to Jake. He was in good spirits and positive about the coming surgery. Except he had to fast since yesterday and the poor guy was "starving." His wife of 55 years, Jewell, his sons JD, Jim, and John will miss this great husband and dad.

We, his church family, must bond together and uplift our brother Jerome at this time when he must adjust to the loss of a special father. I go down to the Methodist Community to see Myrna Beck, Frances Kissel, and Doris Vandine. After the Monday prayer breakfast, I saw Myrna as she was doing her physical therapy. She looked great, had a great attitude, and was doing remarkably well with her "rehab." She was on her feet, using a walker, and the therapist challenged her to go faster and faster. God is good and he looks after His own!
I prayed with her and headed down the hall to find Frances getting her laundry ready to do. She is an amazing lady. She is very "together." She told me what all her kids were doing and what her grandkids were doing. Then she corrected me about who was related to who among New Palestine families. We then tried to call Doris and invite her to lunch but couldn't get her on the phone. So I went down to her house. She seemed to be doing great! We are blessed to have these fabulous servants for Christ in our church family.

OMG

Oh my goodness, Oh my gosh, or even Oh my God...
My Sunday School class discussed OMG Sunday. IS the saying blasphemous? Or is it just calling on the majesty of our Lord? I prefer to look at is as a positive thing. Most of the time when it is used it is reflecting the awesomeness of our God. If we see or hear an OMG it gives us the opportunity to talk about God. Perhaps to even say to the speaker...oh I am glad to hear you're a Christian.

This past weekend the tragedy that happened at the Fairgrounds brought lots of OMGs. Some people suffered great loss there, but it also gave thousands of people a chance to show their Christlike behaviors helping others. As much as we need to pray and support those who suffered or are still in pain, we also must praise God for His sending many "angels" of care who stepped up to help in many ways.

May God bless those who helped save lives and even put themselves in harms way in order to serve others. The term truly means helping to keep folks comfortable during the last days (weeks) of their humanly existence.

Two of our long time members and Christian family friends are now suffering with major life changes. Both Myrna Beck and Marge Barrett are on my heart right now. Both have major health issues which will ultimately bring their demise. They are ready to see Jesus but we are not really ready to let them go just yet. Loved ones are so very hard to let go even when we know it is time. Myrna is in Franklin at the "big house..." the Franklin Methodist Home. Our beloved Linda Quick is her daughter and main caregiver. Marge Barrett is presently at Community North but may go home soon. Her daughter Julie is her main caregiver and lives with her most of the time. We need to pray for Myrna and Marge and that they can go home to their Lord peacefully. We also need to continue to support with cards, calls and prayers Linda and Julie and their families.

God Bless the USA

JT said today in prayer that God was as close to us as the air we breathe. He knows our every need. He hears our prayers. I truly believe God "wants" the USA to be HIS country. We, as Christians, need to continue to be His emissaries, His ambassadors, His children. If all goes well, Marge will move to a rehab center in a few days for a 6 - 8 week session. They haven't decided where she will do her rehab.

Ann Kitley remains at Springhurst in Greenfield. He is risen! The fact He lives gives all of us hope for the promise of eternal life if we give ourselves to Christ. He is the Good News of the world.

This week several members of our church family had good news in their lives. Our good friend Walt Willitts got good news from the doctor that although he is experiencing some diminished senses, their is nothing negative found on his brain.

Word is Nancy Yount is back to work at the profession she loves aiding children as they mature in their educational lives.

Mary Lynn Reese got good news about her back. She has had much pain but it is now controlled with medications.

Pam Komendo got good news that her discolored arm is normal and due to her recent surgery. It should be nothing to worry about which relieves her of concern.

Donna Koohns continues to improve at home after her broken leg.

God is so good to us! He hears our every prayer. He knows what is in our hearts. He is with us in our most desparate times and cries with us. But...He also rejoices with us. He laughs and sings with us when we are celebrating! JT even said He "dances" with us. WOW...Is that ever a radical thought for Methodists!
I know He cares for us. He helped Donna Koohns through her recovery after a serious fall. He watched after Carol York as she recovered from back surgery. He helped Barb Alexander as she worked through her broken arm. He also is encouraging for Anne Dawson, Jackie Ponsler, Greg Brittain, Gloria Kitley, Kay Gumberts, Marge Barrett...and others as they continue to find their way after the loss of loved ones..

God is good! He will continue to look after Marge Barrett and Julie as Marge now has health issues of her own. He will be with Dave and Nancy Yount. He will be with YOU. The power of prayer is immense. God will reward us for our trust and faithfulness. It is up to us to continue in OUR faith by showing our love for Him by showing our love for others. Pray for others. Call. Send a positive note..or e-mail! It all will work for good if YOU do it in faith with the love of Christ.

God is so good! The sun is shining, it is warming up, robins are hunting worms, and the raccoons are getting in my bird feeder...but that's another story.
With the positive signs of Spring, our spirits are brightened and we just feel better. We don't have to fear ice and snow and falling or crashing our automobiles. The grass is getting greener. The trees are beginning to bud out. Kids are back outside playing. All these are signs of changes in our weather and our lives. It reminds me of the greatest renewal in our lives we can ever have. It is the refreshing knowledge we get when we give our lives to Christ. We are renewed by His presence in us. We are renewed by the Holy Spirit directing us. We are renewed in the promise of eternity for believers in Christ.
Now that we have changed our clocks for daylight savings time, let's changed or renew our attitudes and spirit. Let's truly find ways to show our Christianity. Let's truly "Love one another..." Let's recognize the love of Christ in all our daily activities and show all those around us what God is all about.

It is still icy!

I just returned to church from Hancock Regional Hospital and Morristown Manor. I was able to see some Morristown friends and Donna Koohns who is now "rehabbing" at the Manor.
Last week, Donna made a trip to the mail box which is a short distance out her front door. She realized the walk and the driveway were all ice so she smartly decided to go straight across the yard in the snow. With her first step in the yard she went down breaking her femur (upper leg) in three places. She did not realize the "snow" on the yard was white, glare ice. After surgery at HRH, she is now on the mend at Morristown Manor, Room 703. I am sure she would love to receive a card of good wishes from her Christian family. However, there is still ice out there so be careful if you go to your mailbox!

Donna Koohns
Morristown Manor #603
868 S. I thought this was so sweet it was worth passing on.
IHS,
Roger
Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey.. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words:

Dear God,

Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her You will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

Love, Meredith

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven.
We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies..' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith along with this note:

Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away. Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart..
Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.
Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write and send it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much.
By the way, I'm easy to find, I am wherever there is love.

Love,

God

I am too old for 12 hour days!

Whew...I am home! It is Monday evening about 8:00 p.m. I left for the Monday prayer breakfast this morning at 7:45 a.m. Breakfast at Carol's Cornerstone Cafe was good as was the conversation and concern of those present. Wayne and Sally Beck had already headed for Florida to get ahead of the incoming storm. John and Gail Hancock were already in Florida. Charles Merlau had to work so Judy, MaryJo, and I joined the Ellises and Wilsons for prayers. (We may be small in numbers, but we are mighty in deeds!) After breakfast we shared a discussion of concerns for others. Then we sent our prayers for many people to our listening and understanding Lord. As I do each week, then I sent an email to our NPUMC "prayer warriors" list so they can all share in prayer for those on our list. By now it was around 11:00 so I headed west to check in at church. Then expecting the worst weather, I decided to head down to Franklin for my monthly visit with Myrna Beck and Frances Kissell. I figured I may not be out too much after today. Myrna was not feeling at all well so after a prayer with her I headed over to the main building to see Frances. She is over 90 and has been living there for 23 years! She is "sharp as a tack" and still walks down to the dining hall for three squares a day. It's good exercise as it is about half a city block...one way. We talked and laughed and reminisced about her childhood and the booming town of Gem where she lived. (Her father had a small gas station and restaurant on the north side of highway 40 just east of 500 West.) After prayer, I figured I'd better get moving back toward Indy. Upon arriving at my truck I found my keys were still in the ignition and naturally the doors were locked. I went back inside and finally found an inner city key...a coathanger. Since I have past experience with such things, I was back on the road in about 15 minutes. JT called me and he was still a bit under the weather. So I went from Franklin to St. Vincent's hospital to cover for him. He had planned to go see Carol York. I got up there by 5:00 and after a short visit figured I'd better get moving home before the weather hit. OOPS....It was already pounding me with freezing rain as I traversed the parking lot to my truck. I headed for home only to find it took me almost an hour to get as far as Meridian and 465. After several more prayers...and calls to Anita to reassure her I was OK, I arrived home. I am hungry and pooped. Maybe Tuesday will be better. LOL

In His Service,

Roger

Our good Christian friend Carol York had surgery today on her back. Her doctor at St. Vincent Hospital explained that her spine was out of alignment and was pressing on her sciatic nerve causing her intense pain. Her daughters, Sandra and Sarah, said she has had this pain for years. But in the last year it has worsened. She is a "trooper" though and has battled through the pain for some time. The doc said he would fuse L4 and L5 using the least invasive means...a few slits instead of one large broad incision. They took her to surgery about 1:45 and she came back to recovery at about 6:30p.m. She may remain in the hospital 3 - 4 days then stay there for rehab a bit longer.

They use some "puppy dog" therapy at St. Vincent and before Carol went into surgery she met "Hank," a Cairn Terrier there. Her spirit immediately brightened! She needs our encouragement and prayers as she mends. I don't have a room number for her yet but calls and cards are always welcome. (Call St. Vincent's patient information to check on her progress.)

IHS,

Roger

Well, it is finally here...1-11-11. I have no idea what all the ones might mean but it's the only time it can happen in a very long time. I know this...Each day is precious and it's our job to make the best of every one God gives us.
With the beautiful snow this morning, it was bound to be a great day! I met a dear friend for breakfast...while it snowed. Then I ran into Grant Hampton...while it snowed. Gail Hancock made Harriett Briles day today by calling her. I think it was good for Gail too because she called me and seemed happy and excited to have made Harriett so happy...and it snowed more. I stopped in to see Judy Willetts and while we visited and solved the world's problems...it snowed. Then when I stopped to check on Carolyn Groschelle...well you know...it snowed. It was a great day. Carolyn has had to put off her hip replacement while she had more tests. She really wants to get back to church, but she doesn't get around too well even with her walker...and then there is the SNOW!!!
When I finally got back to church...it snowed some more...and as long as I can keep my truck "shiny side up" I 'll still enjoy it!!!
Tomorrow is 1-2-11 and it will be the first day of the rest of your life. Brown'/>
From the Upper Room

The January 3 Upper Room reading was so inspirational to me I have to pass it on to those of you who may not read it.

1 Corinthians 12: 25-26

"All the body's different parts have the same concern for one another. If one part is praised, all the other parts share its happiness."

What an apt picture the apostle Paul gave us when he described believers as being the parts of Christ's body! As with a human body, each of us has our own unique part to play. No one else can contribute what God has planned for you or me within Christ's own much loved and valued body. Lately, I've been needing to relearn this. In our church several gifted people younger than I make a fine contribution to the church's ministry. As I watch and listen, seeing the eager response people give them, my mind is filled with If-only-I-could-do-that thoughts. It's easy to become resentful when instead I could be happy because God is at work through these other members of our common body. After all, when an athlete wins a race, his whole body jumps for joy. You never see an arm or a leg resentfully refusing to share in the celebration.
So it's important for me to celebrate because God's work is being done so well by other parts of Christ's body. At the same time, it's important for me to identify my own unique place and responsibility in the body and to experience the pleasure of fitting in with everyone else as, unite, we respond to Christ, our head.
As competitive as I am, this really struck a nerve for me! May God proudly bless each one of our family who serves to help bring others to or keep others close to our Christ!
IHS,
Roger

Merry Christmas

It's Christmas week and everyone is out picking up last minute items. I know since half the people I've stopped in to see are not at home. That's OK though. I am thrilled people are in the Christmas Spirit! I do hope, however, that everyone remembers the greatest gift that has ever been given and the reason we celebrate. God gave to the world the gift of love in the body of our Lord Jesus Christ. May His peace be with you and yours throughout the holiday season and also stay with you in 2011.

IHS,

Roger

Cold trucks are for the birds!

Brrrrrrr... It's cold this week! I have had a little different week this week. We cancelled the prayer breakfast Monday due to the inclement weather so I sent a few extra notes and made a few calls I wouldn't normally have time for on Monday. Taking cookies from the Fellowship Dinner to some folks Monday was rewarding. However, it is so brutally cold now that my truck hardly gets warmed up before I stop at a members home for a visit. Then after the hour of encouragement, caring and praying...when I return to the truck, it's cold again. Then I just repeat this four or five times over. They say insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, so today I changed the pattern. I drove our Honda Pilot with heated seats!

This week we lost two long-time members and friends in Christ. Glen Beck, pastor for many for over 52 years passed into the arms of Jesus on Sunday. He made thousands of home and hospital visits over the years and was a wonderful friend and inspiration to me. Then Monday, Dorothy Brackney passed over into God's kingdom also. These were two fine people who will be greatly missed by their families and friends!

I suffered another loss this week too. One of "my kids" from Morristown, Sarah Catherine Church lost her life in an auto accident. She was 18! It is a tragedy to us when we lose anyone dear to us, but we should never have to say goodbye to one that young. She was a sweet and loving soul who was just beginning her life. I feel the pain her parents and grandparents must have and am so sorry for them. When things like this happen it reminds me how valuable each day is for we as Christians. Every day we have another chance to worship Him. Every day we have an opportunity and privilege to tell others about Him. Every day we have a chance to show the love of Christ to others! Let's begin today and make every day count...for Christ.
IHS,
Roger

Dorothy Gunn update

I visited Dorothy two different times last week at Methodist Hospital. She was still in intensive care. She was asleep both times and it is not my practice to awaken a recovering patient. So all my information comes from the nurses or Janet, Dorothy's daughter-in-law. Dorothy was due to come out of intensive care last week when they discovered she had pneumonia. So, they are keeping her where they can monitor her best. The nurse said she is improving. Janet said she is trying to eat so she can get stronger. She is getting up to sit although she still has excruciating pain. She is determined though and trying to do the things she knows she needs to do to get to go home. She doesn't want to go to an assisted care facility...but home when she is released from Methodist. If she continues to eat, get stronger and beats the pneumonia, she'll likely go home next week-end.
(Remember...some of what I am saying is second hand or conjecture intended to keep friends in the loop. I love the day though because it gives me a chance to visit with lots of friends and pray for many others. I start with a nice breakfast with my Carol's Countryside Cafe friends when we discuss who is in need of our ongoing prayers. We start at 8:00a.m. and seldom finish before 10:00a.m. We encourage newcomers but usually it's the same group, the Ellis's, the Becks, the Merlaus, the Hancocks, the Wilsons, Marge Seaton, MaryJo Shaw, and yours truly. These families are wonderfully committed to prayer for others. This prayer breakfast is the perfect start to the week! Then I go to NPUMC. After I get to church about 11:00, I return all my emails and write notes to some congregation members who may need some encouragement. Then I write to all the folks who visit our worship service for the first time. After skipping lunch, I often visit a few members of our NPUMC family. This week I made the "haul" to Franklin as I wanted to catch up with Glen and Myrna Beck (Linda Quick's mom and dad) and Frances Kissell. I had a nice visit with the Beck's, however I am saddened to see Glen's declining health. All through his ministry, he was a visiting caregiver for others. Now he needs our care and our prayers.
If you are so inclined, send him a card of encouragement.

Glen and Myrna Beck
102 W. She did it her way! She had all her children and grandchildren at her house Wednesday and shared her love and memories with them. When she told them goodbye, she knew she would see them next in heaven. She was a wonderful example for all of us. She was hard working. She was a loving friend to everyone. She loved the Lord and showed it in her everyday life. And when Milly "asked" you to do something, you were almost compelled to do it. She knew her time on earth was not long so she got everything she could in order...not to be a burden on anyone else. When I visited her on Tuesday, I was a bit taken back but honored with her request that Tom Charleston and I sing for her funeral. What could I say but YES. Milly had "asked" me! Tom and I were both honored to be able to do this small favor for her...we just didn't want to lose her so quickly.
In addition to raising five great kids, Milly was a mother figure to so many others. She had many, many children who received the best care and positive influence as she drove them to and from the New Palestine schools for 31 years. Most of us can only hope to be as influencial as she was in the lives of so many others.
My friend Milly has gone on to her reward. Let us always remember how blessed we are to have known Milly Tucker. Since I was oblivious to anything about Dorothy, I was a little upset to hear she had fallen over two weeks ago and no one had informed me. I could have been praying for her. I could have been praying "with" her! Well, it is my philosophy to always look forward...not back so I made plans to see her. I visited Jim and Dorothy only to hear more bad news. First, when she fell, she broke one of her vertebra. She has a brace but has lots of pain. Second, there was a field fire and their combine was recently burned up. Then at the hospital her doctor found an aortal aneurysm! She is scheduled for surgery on October 12 if her back can handle it. It will be an eight hour ordeal. Now, Dorothy is always upbeat and ready to get it done but certainly concerned about how she'll handle it. Jim is noticeably worried too. They both need encouragement. Wouldn't it be great if they got a mailbox full of encouraging cards from their church family? Please consider taking five minutes to send them a card or note. They will be surprised and happy to know they are loved by their NPUMC family.
IHS,

Roger

Jim and Dorothy Gunn
2401 W 400 S
Greenfield, IN 46140

Barnabas List

We’ve been looking for ways to be more connected as a church body. After some brainstorming, we have developed a new email address, caringministrynpumc@comcast.net, to be a central hub to begin to achieve this goal. It is our hope that you, as a church body, will use this email address to in essence “tell on” your fellow church goers! We want to hear follow ups on any health concerns, prayer requests, wedding anniversaries, births in the family, those in the hospital or rehab facilities, those at home recovering from or struggling through any illnesses or surgeries, and other information you would like to share. The plan from there is to publish this information once a month in the weekly bulletin and newsletter. You can expect it to be in the bulletin as an insert on the first Sunday of each month, as well as the newsletter which is delivered to your inbox on the first day of each month. This will be a trial run and we are excited to hear your input and responses as we try to connect our church body better. The sanctuary renovation was officially blessed by not only Bert Kite, the District Superintendent, but also Michael Coyner, the Bishop. Bishop Mike, as he likes to be called, delivered a succinct and excellent sermon message using the "prodigal son" scripture.

He reminded all of us not to have the "older brother symdrome" of "What about me?"

The choir sang, Praising Hymns and Brand New sang and God flooded the sannctuary with morning light. In fact, it was so bright as light shone through the high east window that from the front I could not see the faces in the congregation. It was as if He and His light were there to also bless our sanctuary and our congregation. GOD IS GOOD!

Caring Ministers Commissioned

Last Sunday was a wonderful day in the life of New Palestine United Methodist Church! Many new lay ministers were commissioned to share in our Caring Ministry Project. These fine Christians will check on missing members, pray with the sick, and be a shoulder to lean on for anyone who may be in need of support. They included: Sheri Smith, Shirley Emsweller, Barb Woods, Kathy Wilson, Charles Merlau, Dee Keener, and Maria Poor. (Mary Jo Shaw, Beth Waggoner, Korey Collier, and Carinne Collier are also a part of this group but unavailable for this service.)

If you, a friend or a family member are in need of prayer and support, contact me and we will offer you the love of this group.

Roger

August Fellowship Dinner

I hope you weren't one of those who missed it! Oh my goodness...did we have lots to eat. I declare that Methodists sure are good cooks and love to eat. On last Thursday, August 26, about 50 of us gathered together for a good old Methodist Pitch In Fellowship Dinner. Now everyone was invited and we had a great time. We started these dinners as an addition to "Meet, Eat and Visit" ministry when we would monthly gather and eat then take food and fellowship to some Christian friends who didn't get out too often. Now we invite everyone and bring to Fellowship Hall any who want to come and need a ride. It's wonderful to see our NPUMC friends that may not attend regularly, or may attend a different service. Jesus told us that "When two or more are gathered in my name, I will be there also." Well, we gather in His name and eat like there was no tomorrow!

Join us for the next Fellowship Dinner on September 30 at 6:00p.m. I, for one, want to sample YOUR cooking!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__QQrOJiCo_0/TEUR-uZ_eXI/AAAAAAAAABQ/MNNU2UaG6Y4/s320/100_1068.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495818689582168434" />

Sanctuary Improvement

Saving a few bucks is important to all of us. Sharing the love of Christ while we commit to doing His work is important too. This past Monday, over 20 NPUMC members gave generously of their time to work for our church. Our volunteer work saved us about $5,000.00. We started at 8:00 A.M. First, JT led all of us with a commissioning message and scripture about “building” the church. Then we had a meaningful communion and prayer before we went about our work of the day. We protected the pews with visqueen and covered anything else that may have been damaged. Then in the next 5 hours, we took up all the sanctuary carpet, removed the brick facing and all the mini-platforms that had been built for various reasons in the sanctuary chancel area. It was amazing to see the wonderful work God allowed us to accomplish. Today we are ready to rebuild the platform adding new audio, video, lights, carpet and more. We will have a splendid new look to our place of worship. We will have the ability to worship in so many more ways. Later on in the summer, we’ll have a “grand opening” service. We hope to have many new friends come and visit our “new” digs and become a part of our Christian family.

We saved several bricks from the old front of the church for anyone who may want a momento from the original church front. They are next to the bell outside the north doors and are free for the taking until they are gone.

The contributors to our Monday effort included: Anita Holder, Mike and Maria Poor, Walt and Judy Willetts, Pam Eccles, Allen Eccles, Roger and Nancy McCarty, Nelson and Dee Keener, Larry and Cindy Gray, Lee and Nancy Collier, Randy and Rita Wells, Gary Jones and Gary Jones, the younger, Bill Ettinger, Bert Armstrong, Bob Mitchell, Bob Lewis, Morris Bloomer, Steve Meno, Jason Lewis, and Butch Jenkins (and Butch jr.). God’s work is being done in our church. He is indeed working in our midst.

Treva Bardonner

I try to visit many of the "older" folks in our church family each week. Many times I learn that they are getting along quite well. Sometimes, however, I find out they are having surgery, just had an accident, are moving to a more suitable home...etc. Well, I love to visit Treva Bardonner. She is a lifelong member of NPUMC and loves the Lord. No matter what else is going on in the world, she is always positive and wonderful. She makes ME feel better just talking to her. This visit she was a bit troubled. She has Vertigo (dizziness) and has had it for some time. It affects her most when she walks which may mean falling. Naturally, I am concerned for her and will continue to pray for her as I hope you will too. She has been to the doctor and has exercises to do for therapy but so far she has no relief.
When I left her, she was preparing to go pick someone up to drive to Greenfield. Please send her a card, give her a call, but definitely pray for her healing and her safety.

Roger

Dale Groschelle

Today we hold a service of celebration for the life of our friend and brother in Christ, Dale Groschelle. Dale lived a full and rewarding life in his 70+ years on Earth. He was a wonderful worker for our church and an excellent craftsman who did much of the laminate work in all the new sections of our CMC. He had a workshop "like no other" in his garage and had a wonderful array of tools that he was willing to share with his good friends...especially his next-door-neighbor Grant Hampton.
Dale will be remembered in part for his generosity, his sense of humor, his love of family, and for his craftsmanship. His wife of 30 years, Carloyn, will miss him and so will his New Palestine United Methodist Family.
Please pray for healing in his family as they mourn his loss.

More Caregivers Sought

We have so many children and adults in our church and community who need to know someone cares. They may "know" Christ but because of present circumstances they are having trouble feeling His presence. Many members of our NPUMC congregation have been trained in praying, listening, and just plain caring for others. For many it comes very naturally. We are seeking those members who want to do God's work in the form of a "Caring Ministry." This may include visiting, praying, or just listening to someone in need of God's love. I have tried to contact those who I know have the skills needed for this work in the faith. But I don't want to miss someone or hurt someones feelings who has trained for this important church work. If you participated in earlier workshops to prepare for this endeavor, or if this is something you would like to be a part of, contact me personally or by email at hoopref@aol.com.
IHS
Roger

Continue your prayers

I frequently ask for your assistance in praying for church and community friends. PRAY

Dale Greschelle is still hanging on at Wildwood. He receives no meds for his many ills...but he just keeps on keeping on. It is now nearly 2 months since the doctors gave up on him and sent him into hospice to "pass." He has lost a lot of weight and seeing him linger is very hard on Carolyn. Fortunately, she has her son, Tom and daughter, Vonda to help her along. (Carolyn says, "Rambo helps too!") He's the family dog.

Milly Tucker is back home and doing well. Monday night, I told Anita not to be alarmed when I got up at 5:00 a.m. Tuesday so I could get to Community Hospital East by 6:00 a.m. to pray with Scott and Ann Dawson. Scott was scheduled for a procedure and I wanted them to rest in the assurance that their church family was right there with them. The unusual thing was when I got there, none of the staff had ever heard of Scott and he wasn't on the "schedule." So I waited for awhile... Then one of the nurses on staff called all the nearby hospitals in case I was in the wrong hospital!!! Those of you who know me well know that before I left the hospital I had made any new friends and saw all their children's pictures, etc. I still didn't know what was wrong though. I was beginning to worry that something bad had happened and they had to cancel. NOPE!!!
Everything was ok except my reading ability, I guess. I had the wrong day and was there one day early. So Wednesday I repeated the trip and got to actually see Scott and Ann. Scott was in good spirits and was confident the doctors would do their thing well. After we prayed together, Scott went off to Dr. Hahn while Ann and I waited. The procedure went well and except for a little Xanex buzz, Scott was fine. The Dawsons are fine members of our church family and are always happy to receive prayers from other believers. (Please pray for my memory or reading ability too!)
IHS - Roger

Prayer Breakfast

Gesina Llewellen update

Sina sent me a note yesterday. Dale enjoyed hearing that! He also said for Grant to borrow whatever he needed. (But not to forget the sign out sheet!) This conversation with the both of them has been great fun. Dale is better and really wants to get back home to Carolyn and his shop. He told me Friday he was going home Saturday...but it hasn't happened unless it did today. Carolyn is doing OK but with her fibroid arthritis, she has good and bad days. They both are thankful for prayers and God's presence in their lives.

Since Johnny's funeral last week, Marge Barrett hasn't felt at all well. She was battling a cold for the last couple weeks and just had to have a restful letdown 'til today. She is feeling a little better and thinks she and Julie will be back to church Sunday. We had a wonderful visit and prayer together. She once again commented about her love for the fantastic church family she has!
Julie remains very diligent and attentive to her mother's needs and is right there for her. These long standing pillars of New Palestine are very special people!

Floyd Waters was really looking upset last week as he attended the funerals of his church friends. I visited with him today and he said he is thankful for the many wonderful years he had with his now departed church friends. I think that it really hits home hard when some of our "age group" friends begin to pass on. I encouraged him to trust in Jesus and also the Father as it says in John.

Dale and Ann Kitley press on but are glad to see Spring approaching too. I took them some of Anita's famous banana bread. Dale had to reciprocate with a quart of his home brew. No... tomato juice! It is...check that...was really good!

Thank goodness for some warmer weather and sunshine! All of us feel better when the sun shines on us and we recognize the glory of God's amazing Grace that shines on us daily! After the last couple of months, we all need to see the sunlight, feel its warmth and recognize the awesome power of our Lord. After recently saying good bye to Myla Hash, John Kitley and John Barrett, we need to remember the hope Jesus gave us in John 14..."Let not your heart be troubled. Believe in my Father and believe also in Me." And if we believe in Him, we can handle all things that jump up in front of us in our daily lives. As Spring approaches and I see new growth and the re-awakening of nature, I hope I can recognize the renewal Jesus give us...if we simply open the door to Him.

Another Sad, Sad Day for us

Today was another sad day for NPUMC and it was a very tough day for me personally. This morning about 11:00a.m. God called John Barrett home. Marge and Julie have been by his side almost constantly since his earlier heart and lung surgeries. When I saw him earlier this week he seemed to be doing so well. I figure God needs someone to plant some trees on the golf courses in Heaven. Nothing would make Johnny happier than to be on the golf course or planting a tree! I sat with Marge and Julie as the "arrangements" were made. I lost a good golf buddy. God gained another angel.

After that I did see Dale Graschelle. That man is amazing! Even last week, I wondered if he was going to make it out of the hospital. He told me this morning his workshop "needed to see him again." Also, he said he couldn't "go" yet...Grant hadn't returned all the tools he's borrowed. Dale is in Wildwood rehabilitating. It is on 16th street, east of Shadeland. His room number is 501. I am sure he'd love to hear from his church friends.

Later today, I visited with Marge Seaton and Donita Jones at Shirley Brothers Washington East. Marge's mother was there and it was nice to see so very many friends paying their respects.

Justine Handley's niece (David Mercer's daughter) had successful surgery on her leg today after a auto crash last week. They think she'll recover fine but has much pain.

As can be expected, all these families need our ongoing prayers.

A Sad Day

JT and I were at St. Francis Hospital today with Gloria Kitley when God recalled her beloved husband John. Monday, after Pastor JT delivered a wonderful and meaningful message celebrating the life of Matt McNeal, the family came back to fellowship hall for lunch. We are Methodists, after all, and sitting down together to share a meal is an important part of our heritage! We all had an excellent meal McNeals' were very appreciative. (This would have been a great opportunity for me to add a nice picture to this blog...but I thought of it while finishing doing dishes. TOO LATE)
Many thanks to Mary McCarty and all who either helped in the kitchen or contributed food for this gathering of God's children in Christian love.

Lucky me!

Some days the Lord just says, "Today's your day!" Monday afternoon, I was planning to go by and see John and Gloria Kitley...then head south to see John Barrett at Kindred Hospital and Glen and Myrna Beck at Franklin. I got a late start and knew I would be lucky to get home by 7:00p.m. Well, God knows my every move before I do it! As I pulled up into the Kitley's driveway, a red car pulled in also. It was Glen and Myrna Beck!!! This was not a coincidence. It was a "Godincidence!" We all had a good talk and laughter over past meetings and fun times together. John and Gloria are well but John's energy level isn't where he'd like. Gloria is a saint! She is just one of those loving, caring people one can't help but love. It is easy to see that God is present in their home. Glen and Myrna are doing well. They lean on one another for support and Glen jokingly states, "I'm in better shape than she is!" Then he, of course, gets "the look." Keep these wonderful members of our church family in your prayers as I do.

John Barrett was better than last week when I saw him. He was able to joke a little bit although he seems awfully weak. He was not on any IVs or oxygen or anything at that time. That meant improvement to me. Please keep he and Marge and that whole family in your thoughts and prayers also.

Fellowship dinner

The monthly fellowship dinner was held last Thursday. It was fun for all who attended. It was great to see Esther Lowe, Neil Jones, Jack Gilbert...and others. This dinner is an extension of "Meet, Eat and Visit" headed up by Barb Woods. It is held the last Thursday of each month at 6:00p.m. We were just meeting, eating together and visiting some of our members and friends who either were alone or couldn't get out much. Now the dinner is open to anyone who wants to come, eat and share God's love with friends. We have tried to have a variety of menus so every person could have his favorite sometime. If you want to bring a food item to the March dinner,or for more information, call Barb Woods, 861-5619 or me.
(About the time the dinner was over, I remembered it would be good to have pictures! Kay Gumberts lost her mother. JT had ear surgery. Stephanie Prince was in the hospital with abdominal pain. Johnny Barrett is still in the hospital after lung surgery and renal failure.
